Leif Erikson was a Norse explorer from Iceland who is believed to be the first European to have set foot on North American soil. He was the son of Erik the Red, the founder of the first Norse settlements in Greenland. Erikson's voyages are thought to have taken place around the year 1000 AD, well before Christopher Columbus's explorations.
