What were Linus Pauling's main contributions to peace advocacy?

Linus Pauling was a staunch advocate for nuclear disarmament. He campaigned against the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, famously petitioning the United Nations with 11,000 signatories from around the world. His efforts played a part in the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned atmospheric nuclear tests. For this, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962.
