What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai, which means thai boxing in Thai, is a striking art that originated in Thailand and came from an ancient martial art called muay boran (ancient boxing).

Where did it come from?

Muay Boran was used in wars but also in contests where fighters would wrap their hands in hemp rope. The ropes were meant to both protect the fighter’s hands and cut their opponent open.

In the 1920s-1930s, King Rama VII pushed to modernize this sport and make it more like western boxing. Instead of hemp ropes, fighters wore boxing with gloves. Referees, rounds, and rings were also introduced.

  • Once homeage has been completed, the bout is ready to begin and both fighters must shake hands before the bout begins to agree that they will compete in accordance with the rules and in a sportsmanlike manner.
  • Muay Thai bouts have 5 rounds each of 3 minutes each, with a two minute rest period between each.
  • Once the bout begins, both fighters attempt to win the match by utilising their fists, feet, elbows, knees and shins in an attempt to defeat their opponent.
  • The fight is won once one fighter knocks out their opponent, the referee stops the fight because they deem one fighter unfit to carry on or the fight goes the full distance and one fighter is declared the winner on points. Should the points totals be equal then the match is declared a draw.

What is the objective of Muay Thai?

The main object, as in every other mixed martial art (MMA), of the sport is for one fighter to win the contest by knocking their opponent out, the opponent being stopped by the referee as unfit to carry on (technical knock out) or winning on points. Fighters usetheir fists, feet, shins, elbows, and knees to try and win the fight as well as an occasional clinch and grapple techniques.
