After her divorce from Napoleon, Josephine retained the title of Empress and lived in the Château de Malmaison, near Paris. She remained on good terms with Napoleon and continued to be an esteemed figure in French society. Josephine died on May 29, 1814, at the age of 50, shortly after visiting Tsar Alexander I of Russia.
