There are three official royal residences in Scotland:

The Palace is closely associated with Scottish history and hosts the annual Royal Week, during which the Queen carries out engagements and investitures.
• Balmoral Castle: Situated in Aberdeenshire, Balmoral Castle is a private residence that has been a favorite retreat for the royal family since it was purchased by Queen Victoria in 1852. The estate features stunning landscapes and is where the family spends their summer holidays. Balmoral Castle is not open to the public during the royal family's stay.
• The Palace of Holyroodhouse: Sometimes referred to as Holyroodhouse, this historic palace is located at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It serves as the Queen's official residence in Scotland when she visits. The palace is open to the public during selected periods when the royal family is not in residence.
