FAQ About League of Legends World Championship

It is a tournament organized by Riot in which League of Legends teams from all over the world participates. It is the biggest tournament held for League of Legends.

The first League of Legends Worlds was held in 2011. The League of Legends Season 1 World Championship was held in Jönköping, Sweden. Season 1, the first and last World Championship organized by Riot Games in partnership with DreamHack, hosted 8 teams. The tournament, held on June 18-21, had a prize pool of $100,000.

Fnatic was the first team in the tournament at DreamHack Winter.

Fnatic, one of the biggest esports teams in Europe, managed to win the first Worlds held and received $50,000. This championship of Fnatic is Europe's first and only World Championship victory.

League of Legends Worlds has been held annually since 2011.

Only North American, European and Southeast Asian teams competed in Worlds Season 1. The teams competing in the tournament are:

The acquisition of almost all of Riot Games by Tencent in 2011 also changed the face of the World Championship. The prize pool, which was $100,000 last year, went up to $2 million in 2012.

In a first in the history of the LoL World Championship, Asian teams have also started taking part in the tournament this season.

Taiwan team Taipei Assassin's won the tournament in which 12 teams competed and got 1 million dollars. This is Taiwan's first and only championship in Worlds history.

Held from September 15 to October 4, 2013, Worlds Season 3 is one of the tournaments in League of Legends history that started the South Korean dynasty.

14 teams participated in the organization with a prize pool of 2 million dollars.

Defeating the Chinese representative Royal Club in the finals of Worlds Season 3 held in the United States, SK Telecom T1 became the champion and won a prize of 1 million dollars.

Worlds 4, held in South Korea from September 18 to October 19, 2014 hosted 14 teams.

The final match played at Seoul World Cup Stadium was watched live by 45,000-seat spectators. It was broadcast live in 19 different languages, and the grand finale was watched by more than 27 million viewers in total and more than 11 million instantaneously.

Worlds Season 5, held between 1 – 31 October 2015, was hosted by Europe.

The group stage matches were played in Paris, the quarter-finals were played at London's Wembley Arena, the semi-finals were played in Belgium, and the finals were played in Berlin.

The Season 6 World Championship was held from September 29 to October 29, 2016.

The Season 5 World Championship Final was watched by over 36 million viewers. The number of instant viewers was more than 14 million. SK Telecom T1, the winner of the championship held for the second time in Europe, won 1 million dollars.

Defeating the Samsung Galaxy team in the final, SKT won the 3rd Worlds Championship and earned $2 million.

The Season 7 World Championship, held from September 23 to November 4, 2017, was held in China for the first time in history.

Previously, a Wildcard tournament was held to determine the teams that would participate in Worlds.

From Season 7, 2017, all teams, including the Wildcard teams, are considered to have participated in the World Championship. Therefore, the official number of teams participating in the tournament was accepted as 24.

Representatives of regions with lower country scores tried to qualify for the main tournament by playing a qualifying round.

The Season 9 World Championship made sure that the Chinese teams have had their say in the world. The tournament was held in Europe from September 2 to November 10, 2019.

Defeating the last champion SK Telecom T1 in the final, Samsung Galaxy took the second Worlds trophy to its museum and won $1.8 million.

For the first time in League of Legends history, a Chinese team has won the trophy. The fight of a Chinese representative in the final also increased the number of viewers considerably.

The Chinese representative was Invictus Gaming and the European representative was Fnatic. Invictus Gaming was the winner and the owner of 2.4 million dollars.

The winner of the World Championship with a $2.25 million prize pool was FunPlus Phoenix, who beat G2 Esports in the final.

The Chinese team's second consecutive World Championship win and the Chinese players' increased focus on Worlds has boosted viewership.

It took place between 25 Sep 2020 – 31 Oct 2020.

DAMWON Gaming matched with G2 Esports in the semi-finals to become the 10th season champion.

Season 11 of the LoL Worlds tournament took place from Oct 5, 2021 to Nov 6, 2021.

Playing against DAMWON Gaming in the final, EDward Gaming won the tournament and became the champion of season 11.

Based on the tournaments held until 2022 Season 12, the team with the most championships is SKT with 3 championships. Except for SKT, no team has more than one championship in the tournament.

DRX, who wrote a good story in the 2022 season, declared the championship with a score of 3-2 against its tough rival T1.

JDG, T1, DRX and GEN.G beat their rivals Rogue, Royal Never Give Up, DWG KIA and EDward Gaming to reach the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, JDG and T1, GEN.G and DRX faced off. As a result of these matches, T1 and DRX made it to the finals.
