The nickname of London is The Big Smoke. Also used as "The Old Smoke" or "The Smoke"
This popular nickname stems from the high air pollution in London England which increased over the centuries. In the mid-20th century, around 1952 great clouds of smoke covered the whole of London and the clouds of smoke stayed in the atmosphere for many days which caused many skin diseases.
