How did Starbucks get its name?
Starbucks is named after the first mate in Herman Melville's classic novel "Moby-Dick". The company's founders were looking for a name that evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of coffee traders. The name "Starbucks" was suggested by one of the co-founders, Gordon Bowker, who thought it sounded strong and memorable. The founders eventually agreed on the name, and the first Starbucks store opened in Seattle in 1971.
